UPDATE...INSTAGRAM IS STILL #WINNING

When Instagram first made the eyebrow-raising, head-turning ploy to copy Snapchat’s Story feature, it brought everyone to the edge of their seats. It became the social media feud of the year, and people anxiously waited to see how the battle would materialize. Backed by Facebook and with a bigger following, there was no doubt that Instagram gained an early foothold on Snapchat. Now, 10 months (and a few more mimics) later, Instagram is still #winning.

“It’s no longer buzz, it’s the norm,” Garett Sloane from AdAge says in an article about the rivalry. “Instagram not only steals snapchat experience, it wins at the story feature.”

Today, experience is the motif of marketing. Thus, a social platform must welcome brands by promising comprehensive tools to reach, connect and impress their audience.

When a platform, like Snapchat, lacks the means to amplify an audience base or communicate with fans on a brand’s own terms, its benefits are practically nil to advertisers. This is why Instagram wins. It outshines Snapchat’s own Stories, and it’s functionality features are off the charts, Tom Ward declares in an article from Social Media Today.

Finding, following and liking new people and content is simple on Instagram. Instagram allows users to search organically for new followers. Snapchat doesn’t. Instagram suggests new users based on current followers. Snapchat doesn’t. Instagram exists to build big followings. Snapchat doesn’t. Instagram allows ads to be linked to other pages. Snapchat doesn’t. Instagram can tailor Story content to specific demographics. Snapchat cannot. You get the gist.

It’s almost impossible to a boost a following unless content is tethered to a page. While Snapchat boasts linking abilities for high-paying advertisers, influencers are out of luck, Ward explains.

“Influencers want to grow their audience, and how can they grow if they can’t be found?” Dan Grossman, VaynerMedia’s vice president of platform partnerships, questions in Sloane’s article.

Furthermore, because the Instagram experience is already widely familiar, it alleviates the process of having to formulate new platform strategies if brands wish to market with Stories.

With Snapchat’s stolen identity, Instagram is the most complete platform, even down to its metrics. According to Ward, while Snapchat only offers the skin and bones with unique views, amount of stories viewed and number of screenshots, Instagram is fully fleshed out, offering numbers on followers, website clicks, impressions, reach, engagement, demographics and more.

What used to be Snapchat’s finest feature is now Instagram’s most popular flurry. If that doesn’t shout #winning, we don’t know what does. As a creative agency, we want the best for our brands. The best platform for the best experiences to garner the best numbers. Sorry Snapchat, but Black Oak Creative is staying team Instagram.
